How did Jo Koy get his Name?
Jo Koy got his stage name from a nickname growing up.
His relatives used to call him “Jo Ko” for “my Jo” in Tagalog when he was young. One day, while he was thinking of a stage name with his cousin, his aunt called him for dinner, saying “Jo Ko, eat!” But Jo misheard it as “Koy” instead of “Ko.” Thinking it sounded good, he stuck with it ever since!
How Did Jo Koy Become Popular?
Starting out in a Las Vegas coffee house, Jo worked tirelessly to push his comedy career forward, eventually earning well-deserved recognition through appearances on late-night shows and his own comedy specials.
In 2017, he shattered records with 23,000 tickets sold and 11 consecutive sold-out shows at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, earning himself an official day dedicated to his honour by the mayor’s office.
Continuing his streak, Koy became the only comedian to sell out six shows at The Warfield in San Francisco and broke attendance records at Club Regent Event Centre in Winnipeg with four sold-out shows. His dominance in the comedy scene persisted with five consecutive sold-out shows at the San Diego Civic Theatre in 2019, setting a new standard for comedic success.
Recognized for his talent and impact, Koy was awarded the prestigious “Stand-Up Comedian of The Year” at the 2018 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal.
