The Reigning Legacy of Queen
Peel back the layers of their history, iconic music & profound influence
Queen. A band name that echoes through centuries of rock history. This legendary British Rock band needs no introduction. From Freddie Mercury’s magnetic stage presence to the masterful song writing of John Deacon, Queen as a band has shown what raw talent, passion & relentlessness can turn into; and it’s definitely nothing short of world breaking.
How did this iconic band come to be known as Queen? Where did it all begin? Let’s dive in and take a closer look.
How Did the Band Queen Form?

Put simple, it’s a tale of friendship, talent, and a little bit of luck.
It all began with a completely different band in 1968 called Smile. Originally comprising Tim Staffell as lead singer and bassist, Brian May on guitar, and Roger Taylor on drums, Smile was on the brink of change when Staffell decided to step down. But fate had other plans in store. Enter Freddie Bulsara, later to be known as Freddie Mercury, a charismatic force destined to leave an indelible mark on music history.
After Ted Staffell withdrew, Mercury’s audition for the vacant lead singer position ignited a new life and fire into Smile. With his electrifying vocal range and magnetic stage presence, Mercury’s inclusion marked the beginning of history changing.
Yet, the puzzle was not complete until March 1, 1971, when John Deacon stepped in as the band’s bassist, solidifying the line-up that would define an era. His contributions extended beyond his bass lines, as he penned several iconic hits for the band, including “You’re My Best Friend,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “I Want to Break Free,” and the unforgettable collaboration with David Bowie, “Under Pressure.”
It was a fusion of hungry talents and charisma that propelled Queen into the stratosphere of rock greatness. They emerged as a powerhouse, defying typical music genre conventions and pushing the boundaries of what we know as music today.
Who Came Up with the Band Name Queen?

The iconic band name “Queen” was the brainchild of none other than the band’s flamboyant frontman, Freddie Mercury. Known for his magnetic stage presence and larger-than-life persona, Mercury’s grandiosity naturally inspired the choice of the band’s name.
“The concept of Queen is to be regal and majestic.” – Freddie Mercury
Despite initial reservations from the other band members, Mercury was steadfast in this name because he wanted it to evoke strength, universality and sheer boldness.
Who Wrote Bohemian Rhapsody?

Back in 1975, Freddie Mercury wrote a song that would go down in history as a true masterpiece: “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Lasting six daring minutes, it takes listeners on a symphonic journey through time. Despite its complexity, Mercury put the song together in just three weeks and propelled them into becoming the world’s best-selling music artists for over four decades.
With its intense lyrics, a famous piano solo and two epic guitar solos, it’s earned its place as one of the best songs ever made. Why? Not only was it the first song ever to get to number one in the UK twice with the same version, but it was intensely inspired by the band members and his very own life.
He had a clever idea when he assigned historical figures to represent each band member in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Scaramouche, a character known for mischief in Italian theatre was chosen to represent himself and his own playful nature. Galileo was a famous astronomer and, in the song, stood for Brian May’s love of science! Figaro embodied John Deacon’s calm demeanor, and Beelzebub captured Roger Taylor’s wild life and energy.
