How It All Began
Simple Minds came together after the breakup of a punk band. The core of the group included vocalist Kerr and guitarist Burchill. Eventually, they found their rhythm with drummer Brian McGee, keyboardist Michael MacNeil, and bassist Derek Forbes, forming a solid lineup.
Simple Minds signed with Virgin Records in 1981 and soon dropped Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call, featuring hits like “The American,” “Love Song,” and “Sweat in Bullet.” Their 1985 album, Once Upon a Time, soared to success, spending 5 consecutive weeks in the top 10 on the Billboard charts in the US!
And from that point forward, Simple Minds has been on everyone’s radar!
What Made Them Breakthrough?
In 1985, the Simple Minds cut “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” ran during the opening and closing credits of the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club. The global success of the chart-topping breakout No. 1 hit drove sales of the film’s soundtrack, which reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in America. Their name has spread nationally and globally not only for this hit song but many.
As they gained popularity, Simple Minds reasserted their political awareness with specific songs and performances for Live Aid and Amnesty International. For the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s seventieth birthday, the group wrote “Mandela Day,” a simple and inviting melody accompanied by very passionate piano and guitar performance.
What’s amazing is that their popularity from back then still rings today; with over 40 years holding the torch of which many bands drew their spark from. They contributed to the rise of European synthesizer-based pop in the mid-1980s and showed people the heart and soul of 80s rock synth!
